How Sumanta and Arpan ultimately decided on Thomas James Homes

When Sumanta and Arpan decided they were ready to buy their first home, they made a list of their wants, needs, and would-be-nice-to-haves of their future new home—an open concept, five bedrooms, a backyard for their kids, and a safe, family-friendly neighborhood in Los Angeles. It seemed simple enough. But as anyone who has ever bought a new home knows, it’s never easy.

After six months, Sumanta and Arpan had looked at more than a handful of homes—previously owned, new construction, even ones outside of their desired search area. “They were all beautiful homes,” Sumanta recalled, “but there was something about all of them that we wanted to change.” It seemed like a waste to go for a new construction home only to spend more money changing it after moving in. Renovating also became a consideration, but they had watched enough HGTV to know that home renovation involved more than an hour-long screen segment. Plus with two small boys and full-time careers, it wasn’t an option they could devote the time and effort needed to oversee.

It was then that their realtor asked if they had considered pre-construction homes. Unlike typical new construction homes, pre-construction gives homebuyers the rare opportunity to control the design decisions affecting a home—lighting plans, windows, wall coverings, cabinetry, fixtures, and the like. Pre-construction means no longer having to settle but not having the pressure of assembling all the moving parts involved with a traditional custom build. And so began Sumanta and Arpan’s relationship with Thomas James Homes.

They knew they had found the perfect homesite when their realtor showed them one on a street they had been looking at previously. “I remember telling my husband months prior that I really loved that street,” Sumanta recalls. “It was lined with trees, had space for the kids to play; There was just something about it that felt like home.” As for the house, it was in the beginning stages of being built, giving Sumanta and Arpan reign over the design features and customization. But not without help.

Cue the Design Team—an in-house team of professionals that craft design packages for each and every Thomas James home and work with homebuyers to customize their homes throughout the building process. Whether it’s switching out light fixtures, adding paint color, or revising flooring plans, the design team is a full-service partner providing guidance, choices and help to create a cohesive design that works with the home and each family’s desires.

“This was our first home and I didn’t want to make the wrong decision, so having the Design Team guide us through the whole process was really helpful,” says Sumanta.

“It felt like everyone involved was really working with us. They considered what we wanted, gave great feedback, and offered suggestions of what they thought would fit well in the space. The designer even sent links to a few light fixture options she thought we would like. I just wasn’t expecting that type of service.”

Fast forward to today, and over a year has passed since Sumanta and her family moved into their new home. It’s become a place where their boys can play in the backyard, a backdrop for nightly conversations around the dinner table, and sanctuary where they can recharge from the day.

They look back on their homebuying experience with TJH as a memorable one. “Thomas James Homes really has that excellence in client services aspect and in all they do. How they work with customers and the personal touches, like following up with a handwritten card, speaks volumes to the type of company they are—they made us feel more like family than a client. The experience of working with them is what drew us in and resulted in a house that we couldn’t be happier to call home.”
